Collio DOC
The Consorzio Vini Tutela Collio is the organization in charge of regulating and promoting the diverse and varied wines of the Collio DOC in Northeastern Italy's region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia.
Also known as Collio Goriziano, this is one of Italy's most exciting and dynamic places to explore wine. As the name suggests, it is quite hilly (collina meaning "hill" in Italian), and the unique ponca soil underneath these hills — as well as the climatic tension between the Alps and nearby Adriatic Sea — yield a terroir ideally suited for refined, complex and age-worthy white wines. Top grapes include Friulano, Ribolla Giallia, Malvasia Istriana, Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay.
However, there is more to Collio than just bianco. The DOC's red wines, while small in volume, regularly give Bordeaux a run for its money. In fact, one of the finest Merlot wines I've ever tasted comes from Collio.
I am proud to have reported extensively on Collio DOC and to have them support my work with a Professional Subscription. Learn more about this compelling wine region with the pages and articles below.
