The Truth About Wine Point Scores

April 28 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm MDT

Three wine glasses with awards slapped on them

For more than 40 years, point scores have been a staple of the wine world. They’ve served as the basis for most wine media coverage, and as a result, they have become commercially indispensable.

And by and large, they’re a joke.

Few things dumb down the discourse on wine more than these numbers, while the tasting notes that accompany them — which are intended to lend context — often offer very little in value. It is no wonder so many people find wine to be a mystery.

In this one-hour talk and Q-and-A, I’ll lend my 10 years of experience covering wine to reveal how wine critics arrive at these fateful numbers, how these scores are derived in an environment completely divorced from a typical wine-drinking context, and how 90-plus point wines have become the norm because of commercial interests.

Most importantly, I’ll offer tips for going beyond point scores so that you can get the right intel to make a wine buying decision that works for you.
