Because It’s January: Wine & Health Roundtable
January 12 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm MST
Join wine writer Kevin Day and registered dietitian Kymberly Wroble for a special wine and health roundtable discussion. Why now? “Because It’s January.”
Day is the Editor-in-Chief of Opening a Bottle and a certified Italian and French Wine Scholar™ (so you can probably guess how he feels about wine). And while Wroble is a registered dietitian, she is also a devoted wine lover who has achieved a WSET Level III certification. She is also the chair of the American Wine Society’s Chicago chapter. Together they’ve published two articles on wine and health for Opening a Bottle, centered on the Mediterranean diet and the World Health Organization’s draconian new stance toward alcoholic beverages.
Now, it’s your turn to pepper us with questions about wine, alcohol and health. We won’t get into medical advice (obviously), but we will discuss the latest research as well as important gaps in the messaging and the media’s coverage of alcohol-related health news. Our aim is to alleviate some of the confusion, especially surrounding the Surgeon General’s new decree on warning labels.
In this discussion, we’ll focus on balancing the pleasures of wine with the demands of good health. We will cover:
- Dry January: How Beneficial Is It?
- “No Safe Level of Alcohol Exists.” What does that mean?
- The Mediterranean Diet: How Wine Plays Into Everything
- Should I Drink This? Non-Alcoholic Wines*
- Q&A
*Sommelier Scott Thomas of Grappolo Food & Wine School and Denver’s Olivia Restaurant will be joining us for the last part of our discussion, specifically to discuss what he looks for when selecting non-alcoholic wine options for his restaurant’s wine list.
Whether you’re actively taking the month off for Dry January to cleanse the system, or you are just curious about how to process the recent negative news on wine, we look forward to hosting you.
This event is free and open to the public.
