Etna DOC
The Consorzio di Tutela dei Vini Etna is the organization responsible for regulating and approving the various red, white, rosé and sparkling wines that come from the slopes of Europe's most active volcano.
Seen as a leader in volcanic viticulture worldwide — and easily one of Europe's most important wine appellations — the Etna DOC continuously delights wine drinkers. No other place in Italy delivers this many highlights across four categories of wine. What I find so impressive about the appellation is how quickly it has achieved this level of success. While the DOC was established in 1968, its modern renaissance did not fully gather critical mass for international esteem until the mid-2000s. Since then, consistency has been a key feature of the wines.
You have to see the vineyards of Etna DOC to believe them: often terraced and riddled with ancient vines, their terroir hallmarks are as much a case of microclimate as they are the age of the lava flow permeating the roots. Few places in the world offer a more fascinating landscape for wine. Explore our archive of Etna-focused articles below.
